Safety tips for heating your home

In light of a recent fire in Southwest Portland, Portland Fire & Rescue is issuing a reminder to folks to make sure they are heating their home safely.  Here's their release:

Portland Fire & Rescue would like to remind everyone to practice safety with alternative heating devices. With the cold weather approaching the Portland area, many residents will use space heaters or other types of heating devices to warm their homes.  If used properly, these can be safe.  But unfortunately, not everyone takes the necessary precautions.  More than 4,000 Americans die each year in fires and more than 20,000 are injured. Many of them might be alive today if they had only had the information they needed to avoid a disaster.

Chimney fire nearly destroys Southwest Portland home

Fire investigators in Southwest Portland say a chimney fire nearly destroyed a family's home.

Luckily, all four people got out of the house safely.

The mother of the family said that when she got her husband, teenage daughter and 11-year-old son out of the house, she hadn't realized how bad the fire was about to get. The fire, which started on the right side of the home where the stove pipe chimney is located, eventually spread over to the roof.

The fire broke out at about 2 a.m., investigators said. The family also told investigators they started a fire in the fireplace Tuesday night and eventually went to bed. The family also told investigators it had been awhile since the chimney had been cleaned.

Washington County Museum gala a rousing success

This year's Washington County Museum gala, entitled "A Swank Affair: Lights, Camera, Action!" was anything but an annual routine.

With many non-profits reporting net losses, the museum's gala committee pulled out all the stops—upping procurement efforts and recruiting Oregon State University men's basketball coach Craig Robinson as Master of Ceremonies for the event, which was held last weekend at the PCC Rock Creek Event Center.

"We have been concerned about our event all year, because the economic downturn has negatively impacted heritage non-profits on a national scale," commented the event's organizer Clarinda Hanson White. "We were unsure of how this would affect our gala, and we certainly didn't expect this year to break last year's record."

However that's exactly what it did — though ticket sales were a little slower this year, local business came through, with more in-kind donations to the museum's live and silent auctions than ever before.
